I’m pleased to share that our paper “Masculinity Norms and their Economic Implications” has been accepted for publication in the Annual Review of Economics. Together with Ieda Matavelli, Pauline Grosjean, and Victoria Baranov, we explore how social norms about how men should behave shape economic outcomes, a topic that has received surprisingly little attention from economists compared to gender norms affecting women!
The paper reviews insights from psychology, sociology, and anthropology, and examines how masculinity norms influence health behaviour, labour supply, violence, and political preferences. Using novel survey data covering 125,000 individuals across 70 countries, we document substantial global variation in these norms and show they matter for a range of important socioeconomic outcomes.
